1940’s Salon Prices

WAILUKU, MAUI Hawaii – When Elaine Shibuya opened Maui’s first beauty shop in 1940 she was called a “beautician” and charged $.50 for a haircut. Her Wailuku shop thrived, quickly becoming a neighborhood institution. She eventually brought two daughters in to work by her side, and the family beautified Maui until they had to close in 2006. Elaine passed away in January of 2009.

Salon 253 is fortunate enough to open its doors at the very same historic location; 253 S. Market St.

Many Thanks to Elaine and her five daughter’s (the five J’s) for letting us live out our dream. Big shoes to fill or should I say little. Elaine’s height was under five feet.
